Heckerling’s witty spin on Austen’s “Emma” (a novel about the perils of match-making and injecting yourself into situations in which you don’t belong) has remained a perennial favorite not only because it’s a smart freshening on a classic tale, but because it allows for so much more past the Austen-issued drama.

While the ‘90s may perhaps still be linked with a wide variety of dubious holdovers — including curious slang, questionable style choices, and sinister political agendas — many on the decade’s cultural contributions have cast an outsized shadow on the first stretch on the 21st century. Nowhere is that phenomenon more apparent or explicable than it is actually with the movies.

It casts Malcolm not just as flawed and tragic, but as heroic much too. Denzel Washington’s interpretation of Malcolm is meticulous, sincere, and enrapturing in a film whose every second is packed with drama and pizazz (those sensorial thrills epitomized by an early dance sequence in which each composition is choreographed with eloquent grace).

To such uncultured fools/people who aren’t complete nerds, Anno’s psychedelic film might appear like the incomprehensible story of the traumatized (but extremely horny) teenage boy who’s pressured to sit in the cockpit of a major purple robotic and choose whether or not all humanity should be melded into a single consciousness, or When the liquified crimson goo that’s left of their bodies should be allowed to reconstitute itself at some point from the future.

We will never be sure who’s who in this film, and whether the blood on their hands is real or a diabolical trick. That being said, a single thing about “Lost Highway” is absolutely fastened: This could be the sexx Lynch movie that’s the most of its time. Not in a nasty way, of course, although the film just screams
